A lot of work is produced in members home workshops following engineering drawings and plans, most models take several years to complete. Components in the models are usually manufactured from raw materials of steel, brass, copper and bronze. Castings are sometimes bought in from specialist suppliers at other times castings are made from patterns made by the member for the model being built.

A lot of progress has been made in the last 10 years with the supply of kit based models that can me assembled with hand tools over a period of time. these model usually come in monthly installments with cost spread over 12 to 18 months.

Model can also be obtained pre-built from the same companies that produce the kit based model, these obviously cost more, but this is useful for the beginner or novice to the hobby.

Like any hobby or past time there is also a second hand market for models and machinery that is used in the hobby, and this aspect is well supported by the trade suppliers at the various model shows in the Uk.

Several magasines are published commercially each month for the hobby, details in Model Pubublications. page
